Submitting an assignment in Moodle is an uncomplicated process. An assignment can be submitted simply by uploading or using the drag and drop function.
Before we get into the details, be aware that from Summer Semester (November 2021), all Federation students will need to have completed the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) before you can submit an assignment in Moodle. For more information AND the link to AIM, read this.

How to submit an assignment
To submit an assignment follow the steps below.
- Go to Moodle, from the Dashboard open the relevant course and click the assignment link.
- The assignment submission status will now display. Note: as shown the submission status will highlight the submission stage (e.g. No attempt).
- Click the Add Submission button to upload the assignment submission.
- The file submission screen will now display. Read the submission conditions and tick checkbox to agree.
Note: the Add Submission button will not display until the checkbox has been ticked.
- To upload the file submission, either click on the add file icon (top right), browse computer for the file, select the file, click Open, click Upload this file or alternatively drag and drop into the designated space from an open folder. Once the file has uploaded it will display in the File submission space.
Note:
– More than one file can be selected to upload at once, but folders cannot be uploaded.
– We recommend that you upload a PDF type file to make the file the most accessible to markers. Most types of files can be converted to PDF.
– Check the maximum size and file limit.
- Once the file(s) have been uploaded the ‘download’ icon will appear, indicating the upload is complete.
- Check that the correct files have been uploaded. Click the Save changes button to submit the assignment.
- The assignment submission will now display as ‘Submitted for grading.‘ However, if the due date and time have not yet passed, your submission can be edited.
To edit, click the Edit submission button. Make any necessary changes, upload document and click save changes.
How to submit a Turnitin assignment
To submit an assignment follow the steps below.
- Go to Moodle, from the Dashboard open the relevant course and click the Turnitin assignment link.
- The assignment submission status will now display.
Note: the submission status will highlight the submission stage (e.g., No attempt).
- Click the Submit paper button to upload the assignment submission.
Tip: scroll to the very bottom of the page and click, Reset user tour on this page, for a guided tour. - The file submission screen will now display. Provide a title for the submission. Your lecturer may have set specific requirements for this. Drag the file to the upload box.
Note: Turnitin only accepts the following file types:-
- Microsoft Word® (DOC and DOCX)
- Corel WordPerfect®
- HTML
- Adobe PostScript®
- Plain text (TXT)
- Rich Text Format (RTF)
- Portable Document Format (PDF)

- Turnitin also supports pasting of text into the browser. Use this option if you are having trouble uploading your file.
Select the Text submission setting from the Submission Type box.
Paste your text in using cut and paste.
Note: all formatting will be lost, so you should discuss this option with your lecturer.
- Check the confirmation box and click Add Submission.
Note: the Add Submission button will not appear until your check the confirmation box.
- Upon successful submission, you will be provided with a submission receipt.
- Click Close at the top right to return to the Submission Overview page. After a slight pause it will refresh with your submission details.
Final steps
Once your assignment has been submitted, an automated email will be sent out from Moodle advising of the submission (see below). The ‘assignment submission‘ link enables you to view the status of your submission.
When the assignment has been assessed and graded, the Submission status / Grading status will update and display as ‘Graded‘.
